About Civil Engineering

Civil engineering here covers the chain from measuring a site to knowing the structure on it will stand. Surveying establishes where things are. Geotechnical engineering establishes what the ground will bear. Structural analysis finds the internal forces, and strength of materials decides whether the sections chosen can carry them.

The chain is also the recommended order, because each subject genuinely feeds the next. It is worth noticing how much of the branch is about uncertainty rather than calculation: soil varies between boreholes, loads move, and measurements always carry error.
